If you have read my bio, you'll know that I discovered cold water therapy at a time when i needed it most. At first the thought of sitting in cold water was frightening, but not as frightening as the world we were living in. It was a winters night in January; there was snow on the ground surrounding the tub that i would soon be immersed in. I stared for a few minutes to the bottom of the water and everything about my body language and mind was naturally telling me to get back inside and get a cuppa. Through sheer determination, focus and breathwork i was up to my neck in 4 degree water and there was a moment where i opened my eyes to see a clear sky full of stars above me, it was then that i realised for the first time ever, my ability to overcome something that my mind was telling not to. The feeling of power afterwards was incredible. Understanding the mind and its purpose and being in control was something I wanted to get used to, and so I went back again and again. Tub dips became loch and sea swims - a regular part of my life now and not to be tough and bold or to follow a trend, but to keep the head noise quiet and to feel safe in a quiet mind for a few minutes each time!
People often ask me, why do you do it, what’s the benefits. Benefits are endless but the biggest different I found is a resilience stronger than ever before both mentally and physically in my immune system. All because of cold water.... and Scotland is full of it. Soon I was taking family to the lochs, encouraging friends to try it and I decided to become a Certified Cold Water Therapy Coach. I understand how cold immersion works with the body, what to be aware of, the benefits and contra-indications because it’s essential to practise safe cold-water exposure. I would love to bring this practice to my community one day — not as a trend or a challenge, but as a genuinely transformative tool for mental and physical wellbeing.
